Volvo Cars celebrates the start of the Volvo Ocean Race and takes part in the fight against plastic pollution in the oceans.

To celebrate the start of the 2017-2018 Volvo Ocean Race, premium manufacturer Volvo Cars today unveils a special edition of its multi-award-winning V90 Cross Country off-road station wagon.

Owners of this model will directly contribute to raising public awareness about the health of our oceans. To support the Volvo Ocean Race’s scientific program to combat plastic pollution in the oceans, the manufacturer will donate 100 euros for each of the 3,000 V90 Cross Country Volvo Ocean Race cars it plans to build. The €300,000 donation reflects Volvo Cars’ long-standing commitment to the environment.

As part of the Volvo Ocean Race’s scientific program, the boats entered in this year’s race are equipped with sensors that record data from the most remote areas of the world’s oceans, such as temperature, air pressure, currents and wind speed. This data will help refine the weather forecasts and climate models used by scientists around the world.
